Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about child therapy include will my child with emotional and behavioural issues benefit from my form of therapy.  A child with emotional and behavioural issues will benefit from therapy. So does an adult. Maarit Rivers specialises in helping the child to overcome stress due to such issues as school performance, friendships, bullying, anxiety and peer pressure.
Your child might struggle to come to terms with parent’s divorce, custody evaluation, or moving house. A child needs help to deal with any number of issues. These can include your child’s or a family member’s illness, death in a family, a friend or a pet. Therapy addresses these issues with sensitivity and loving guidance.

How do I book an appointment?

Ring, text or leave a message on 0417 462 115 or e- mail

I will be in touch with you shortly.

What happens in the first session?

The initial session is free. This is session is conducted without your child. It is to find out about the child’s history and conditions. We then discuss the situation at an adult level. You also have a chance to get to know me and see the premises.

How many sessions does my child need?

I use a Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (designed by Robert Goodman, 2005) to assess the child. This gives some indication. However, initially you need to commit the child for twelve weeks. We then together assess and review the situation to decide if the child needs to continue.

How often does the child need to attend?

Once a week.

How long does the session last?

Fifty minutes.

How will I know when my child has had enough sessions?

You are likely to notice when your child has reached enough strength, resilience and happiness. Or you may notice the symptoms are no longer present. Sometimes your child tells you. Usually you decide after discussing this with me.

How much the sessions cost?

For a child: The cost for six sessions is $420 if paid on commencement of each six-session block. Otherwise the sessions are $80 at the conclusion of each individual session.

For an adult: The cost is $100 a session payable at the conclusion of each individual session.

How can I pay?

These payments can be made by cash, personal cheque or by credit card.

Are these costs refundable by Medicare or Private Health Insurance?

You can claim my fees from Medibank Private.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

Is there a parking at the premises?

Yes, we have parking available.

What if I want to cancel an appointment?

If you are unable to make the appointment, please provide 24-hour advance notice. If notification is given later than 24 hours a full fee is charged. All reasonable efforts are made to meet your needs in emergency or reschedule as needed. You can cancel by text, e- mail, or leaving a message on the answer phone.

Are you available during school holidays?

Yes, we can have sessions over the school holidays if or your child wish to do so. Let me know what you want to do.

Are you available to give presentations and seminars to parent groups or staff at school or preschool?

Yes, I am happy to come to talk and do small hands on workshops to your group. I cover subjects, such as sandplay, play therapy, art therapy, bullying, anger management etc.
